Scorpions start in style Newcomers South Wales Scorpions made a winning start to their Co-operative Championship One campaign with a dramatic 22-20 victory over Workington at the Gnoll. The Neath-based club, who were formed to fill the void in south Wales created by the Crusaders' move north to Wrexham, let slip a 20-0 lead and needed a penalty from Lloyd White four minutes from the end to secure the points. Skipper Aled James, formerly with Crusaders, made history by scoring the Scorpions' first-ever try after just three minutes and others from Steve Parry and Lee Williams (2) put the home side in total command at 20-0. Workington stunned the Scorpions with a fightback which brought tries for Aaron Low, Neil Frazer, James Marshall and Andrew Beattie plus two goals from Scott Kaighan which tied the scores but the Welshmen had the final say.
