Oldham hope for Mayfield

Oldham RL Club hope to stage their first home game of the season on Sunday at Mayfield Sports Centre in Castleton, Rochdale where they were recently in Law Cup action against Hornets RL.

If all goes according to plan Roughyeds and derby rivals Hornets will again go into battle at the same venue (3.00pm kick-off), this time with Oldham hosting a Northern Rail Cup clash there because they are not yet able to use their proposed new home in the borough.

They asked the Rugby Football League for a postponement, but the sport's governing body rejected the request and insisted that the game went ahead as scheduled.

Oldham's search for somewhere to play took them to Mayfield where they quickly agreed a one-off deal to hire the ground -- and then told the RFL what was happening.

The fixture can't be confirmed, however, until a couple of ground-safety matters are cleared up to the RFL's satisfaction.

"We've a couple of boxes to tick on matters such as stewarding but, hopefully, everything will be tied up by lunchtime today," said Roughyeds chairman Chris Hamilton.

He added: "We are not in a position we wanted to be in, but we are getting on with it. This is an important game and we hope fans will turn up in numbers and show their support for the club.

"Over the course of the next few days we feel sure supporters will take the view that all this has been well worth while."

As soon as Mayfield is confirmed as Sunday's venue the news will be posted on the club's website at www.roughyeds.co.uk and from lunchtime onwards today fans can ring the Roughyeds office on 0161 628 3677 for match information.

Season-ticket holders who have still not collected tickets can do so from the office in Lansdowne Road, Chadderton up to 5.00pm on Friday or before the game at the ground on Sunday, be it Mayfield Sports Centre or somewhere else.

More specific match information for supporters, including admission prices, will be put out once the Mayfield venue is confirmed.

Season-ticket holders have so far paid for standing only but as a gesture of goodwill from the club they will be guaranteed a seat on Sunday -- free of charge -- up until 2.45pm.

The club points out that there will be seats available for non-season ticket holders as well.
